Message from the District Commissioner

14 June 2022

I first started in Scouting back when I was a Cub at 1st Basingstoke on Monday 6th September 1999. Since then, I have enjoyed many Scouting adventures and roles including being a scout, an explorer, a young leader, an assistant section leader for beavers, section lead for beavers, assistant section leader for Cubs, section leader for explorers, assistant district commissioner for scouts, deputy district commissioner and now district commissioner. It is strange to think that some 8317 days later, I will be stopping my scouting journey for the time being. I have made the very difficult decision, to step down as district commissioner for Basingstoke East, and from scouting completely for a variety of personal reasons. Firstly, my work commitments continue to take more of my time, coupled with the local and national shortage of teachers, I find myself in the position of having to teach a class and juggle my deputy head teacher responsibilities and have to be realistic that something had to give in this situation. Further than this, I also need to spend more time with my family who have been very patient all of this time but now it is right that I spend more of my time with them.

The process of searching for the next district commissioner or team has begun and the county commissioner and his team will lead on this process. For now, it will be business as usual until I step down on 31st July 2022. A decision about who will hold the role of District Commissioner (Acting) is yet to be decided. Once we now more of these arrangements, then we will communicate these out to the whole district.

I want to thank each and every one of you for all that you do for scouting in the local area. You really do make a difference to the lives of our young people and I know will continue to be a truly remarkable team now and into the future.

I wish you all the very best of luck with your future endeavours and hope that maybe one day, I can return to scouting and volunteer alongside you all again.

Kind Regards

Jamie Andrews

District Commissioner
