Closure of Basingstoke Sea Scouts

12 March 2021

It is with great sadness that we must announce the permanent closure of Basingstoke Sea Scout Group.

Basingstoke Sea Scouts have been a part of Basingstoke East District for many years, however, have been hit very hard with losses in youth and volunteer numbers by the Coronavirus pandemic. The group has been without a GSL for some time and following discussions with their Group Chairman, it was decided that in the best interest of the young people, the group should be closed. This decision has now been agreed by the District Board of Trustees and we are in the process of formalising this.

We are pleased to share that the adult volunteers within the Group are being relocated across the District. Debs Hayter from the Beaver team will be moving to Old Basing Beavers on a Tuesday. We’re pleased to say that the Cub team; Phil Hawkins, Danny Evans and Jack Dilly will be joining Old Basing, along with all their current Cub Scouts and finally the Scout Team will be joining the team at 8th Basingstoke.

All leaders and young people have been contacted and offered places at other groups within the district. It is always sad to see a group close, however the placement of these young people into new groups will really enhance their Scouting and offer new opportunities that would not have been possible had we continued to run the group. We would like to thank the whole team of volunteers at Basingstoke Sea Scouts for all they have done for the group.

We wish all the young people and volunteers the best of luck in their new groups and look forward to seeing them all at District events in the near future.
